Cristina Almansa, M.D., Ph.D., is Head of Clinical Development and Medical Scientific Affairs at Ironwood. Prior to joining the company in July 2020, Dr. Almansa spent almost four years at Takeda, serving as the global clinical lead in GI motility. Prior to her time at Takeda, Dr. Almansa was Medical Director, Gastroenterology Development, at Ferring Pharmaceuticals from 2014 to 2016. Before working in industry, Dr. Almansa spent five years at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville conducting clinical research on eosinophilic esophagitis, GERD, esophageal dysmotility and lung transplant outcomes, chronic cough, colorectal cancer screening and colonoscopy quality. While at the Mayo Clinic, she held an academic position as Assistant Professor of Medicine from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Almansa was a practicing gastroenterologist at the Hospital Universitario Clinico San Carlos in Madrid, Spain from 2005 to 2009 where she was involved in several industry sponsored studies in GI disorders. In 2006, Dr. Almansa was awarded the AGA-sponsored Jon Isenberg MD Scholar International Medical Award and spent one year at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville conducting research in Esophageal Diseases before returning to her clinical appointment in Madrid in October 2007. Dr. Almansa has published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Gut, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Neurogastroenterology & Motility, among others, and she serves on the board of directors of WEST (Women in the Enterprise of Science and Technology). Dr. Almansa earned her M.D. and Ph.D. from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain.
